Welendus named among top 100 UK startups
WELENDUS has been named as the only peer-to-peer platform on a list of the top 100 Startups.
The Startups 100, compiled by small business websites Startups.co.uk, ranks the “most awe-inspiring and fast growth potential” businesses that have launched in the past three years.
Firms submit their own entries for judging between February and April, with the list released in May.
This year’s compilation includes businesses ranging from lingerie and meal planning websites to online mortgage brokers, challenger banks and lettings agents.
Welendus, founded by Nadeem Siam (pictured), is ranked at number 76 for giving consumers access to short-term ethical loans.
“Since launching in December 2017, the business has attracted 3,500 registered active users – early growth which it expects to increase rapidly given the size of the UK population and the fact that its interest fees are comparatively low compared to other short-term lenders,” the Welendus entry said.
“With projected turnover of £6m for 2018, the founders tell us the next 12 months will bring customer acquisition, expansion and growth.”
Welendus, which gained approval from the Financial Conduct Authority in October 2017, wants to shake up the payday lending market by offering more reasonable interest rates than its competitors.
No other P2P lenders feature on the list, although Talentful, which providers contractors to fintech firms such as Zopa for temporary projects, is named at number 14.
